Synopsis
In this episode, Adam goes trick-or-treating for the truth behind myths and misconceptions like candy poisoned by strangers, the legendary War of the Worlds radio broadcast and psychics who claimed to communicate with the dead.
Plot
Adam surprises a Stuart who has just come back from Trick-or-Treating who wants Adam to check his candy for poison. Adam explains to Stuart that it's just a myth propagated by the media year after year. Cultural shifts tend to push "stranger danger" specific to common fears. And any poisoning has only come from adults known to the children. But Stuart enjoys being scared, that's what Halloween is all about!
Stuart loves to listen to 'War of the Worlds" on the radio, the scariest Halloween event in U.S. history, Americans rioting after hearing the program. But Adam explains that there's no evidence that riots never occurred and that it was a hoax created by the threatened newspaper industry.
The TV show 'The Jersey Shore-acle' comes to Stuarts home who wants to connect with a dead spirit. Adam explains the history of seances and how they are the ultimate scam. After The Jersey Shore-acle does a reading with Stuart and his supposed dead Grandpa, magician Mark Edward explains the concept of "Cold Reading".
Stuart gets into bed super disappointed. But Adam explains why the real world should be the scariest, due to ordinary people's ability to manipulate others. Stuart gets quite the scare when his parents tell him that hey couldn't have met Adam Conover, as the show was canceled over fifty years ago.
