Adam Ruins Spa Day is the thirteenth episode of Season 2 of Adam Ruins Everything. The episode aired on October 17, 2017.
Synopsis[]
Put on a comfy robe and settle in for some relaxing debunking of misconceptions. In this episode, Adam explains how its impossible to suck toxins out through your skin or sweat, why MSG is nothing to be afraid of and how the placebo effect is more powerful than we may have realized.
Plot[]
Julia walks into her spa stressed out about an article she's meant to write for work and radiating toxicity. Adam is in the chair next to her to relax and debunk the scam that is "detoxing". Anything can be toxic if you ingest too much of it. Luckily, the human body is equipped with internal organs, so Julia decides to try a colon cleanse. But colon cleanses can also be dangerous. Dr. Gerry Mullin sets the record straight and leaves Julia with a "butt signal".
Adam sets off to set the record straight about MSG, which is a harmless natural chemical. The myth originated from one letter to the editor from one doctor that went viral. The hysteria resulted in a racist boycotting of Chinese restaurants. It's more a psychological phenomenon, especially considering that MSG is in everything.
Julia suggests using crystals, so Adam introduces Kathryn Hall, a placebo specialist. She describes how powerful placebos can be. Adam shows Julia how her wellness products take advantage of the placebo effect. However, placebo effects can be used wisely. Jule gets an idea for writing the article that was stressing her out.
